Shawna Scherer

I have been an educator for twenty-two years. Twenty of those years have been in Urbana. I began my career at Cunningham Children’s Home where I worked for three years as a special education teacher for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities. I left after three years in order to gain special education teaching experience in other settings. I returned to Gerber seven years later to serve as principal. After six years in that role, in an effort to gain general education administrative experience, I accepted the position of assistant principal at Urbana Middle School. I served in that role for five years before joining Urbana Adult Education and the district leadership team this year.

I am a proud Urbana resident and the parent of a fifth grader at Dr. Williams. I am passionate about ensuring that ALL students, especially our students of color, have equitable opportunities and the necessary supports for success. I am extremely proud to work and live in a school district where the leadership is brave enough to make decisions with these core values in mind. My non-work passions include spending time with my family, cooking, reading, and traveling.
