Kathy Maniates2 102513Kathy Maniates began teaching English as a Second Language at Urbana Adult Education in 2006. She currently teaches high beginning and advanced  students in both  the day and night programs. A proud native of California, Kathy attended U.C. Berkeley where she earned a B.A. in Psychology and Social Welfare, and then obtained a Master’s in Education at UCLA, where she also received her Elementary Education teaching credential and  Spanish bilingual and ESL endorsements. Kathy taught in Spanish bilingual programs at the elementary and middle school levels, both in California, and at Leal school in Urbana,  but her current passion is helping the brave and inspiring adults who come here from all over the world to learn English.
Her philosophy of teaching English is we must create a community of learners and then engage them in real world language activities that students can use immediately outside the school walls. These activities, supported by lessons in grammar, reading and writing enable students to be successful, confident speakers of English.
Her outside interests include cooking hot spicy international food, exercise (Zumba classes, especially) and reading.
